GET MORE DONE... WITHOUT DOING IT ALL Yourself

Priority overload has become a defining condition of senior leadership. Taking on the extra work yourself can lead to burnout and pull you away from strategy. Pushing an already-stretched team harder can erode trust and risk losing top performers. To create capacity, you need to make calculated trade-offs and distribute authority.   Address the resourcing problem. Ask your team what work can be paused or scaled back to make room for new priorities. Advocate for deadline changes or extra support, and keep your boss informed when resources shift.   Share how you make decisions. Explain to your team how you weigh trade-offs and what “good enough” looks like right now. Be clear about when an issue needs to be escalated, so your team can move without waiting for you. Redistribute ownership. Encourage your direct reports to delegate more work—and look for responsibilities that could sit more naturally with another team or department. Connect the work to motivation. Show people how new responsibilities will support their goals—and how the work contributes to the outcomes your team or division is measured on. Hold firm when necessary. Acknowledge people’s concerns while making clear when a deadline or priority is fixed.
