MANAGEMENT TIPS
STRENGTHEN CYBERSECURITY BY BUILDING TRUST
Policies, audits, and mandatory training are essential to cybersecurity, but their benefits eventually level off. To reduce risk, you also need strong relationships between your security team and the rest of the business. When employees trust one another, they’re more likely to raise concerns early and work together to address threats. Here’s how to build that trust.
Create a culture of shared responsibility. Encourage security leaders to approach their business colleagues as partners rather than enforcers. Bring security teams into product design meetings early, and involve business teams in security exercises. Communicate openly, understand each other’s goals, and ensure employees are comfortable reporting potential risks.
Measure collaboration. Track how quickly employees voluntarily report incidents, how often security teams are included in planning meetings, and who participates in cross-functional exercises. Incentivize a strong working relationship between business and security leaders by including collaboration goals in their performance reviews.
Rethink your security budget. Before funding another compliance initiative, consider whether investing in stronger relationships between security and business leaders could deliver greater benefits. Building trust can make your existing cybersecurity investments more effective.
